Statement about our eviction

Sunday 24th August

We are Tottenham Family Fightback. We are local parents, grandparents, carers, play workers, youth workers and kids. We came together to reclaim the Living Under One Sun community centre that Haringey Council allowed to fall vacant during the summer holidays.

For the past two weeks, we have been running a full programme of activities for children and parents alike. From daily free meals to family fiestas, from language classes to children’s sports groups, hundreds of local people have become part of our community.

Haringey Council are now taking us to court for eviction on Tuesday 26th August, before the end of the school holidays, with no plan for how local families are going to be supported in the meantime.

Our aim has been to provide an essential service to local families over the summer where Haringey Council has failed. We want to make sure that the space is passed on to a local community group from September onwards.

We urge Haringey Council to allow us to stay for the remainder of the school holidays and cease attempts to evict local families and children.

Moving forward, we firmly oppose Haringey Council’s plans to demolish this vital community space. The proposal to replace the existing building with a footpath and ‘hub’ five times smaller than the current space entirely fails to meet the needs of the Tottenham community.

We are asking today for your support to keep our programme running for the final week of the summer holidays and to stop the demolition of the community centre. This will cover any legal fees arising from the eviction process, plus campaign funds for our next steps.
