Harry Potter Logic Puzzle - Dumbledore's Army Walkthrough

A1 – Harry’s clue tells us that the person who came up with the idea for the DA is in A6, so we can place Hermione there.

A6 – Hermione’s clue tells us that everyone with a Yule Ball date in the quiz shares a row or column with their date. She also tells us that Champions’ dates are in corners. The three Champions’ dates in the DA are Hermione (already placed), Cho, and Parvati. Parvati must share a row or column with Harry, and since A column’s corner is already occupied, she must be in the first row in F1. Parvati tells us that twins are adjacent, as are other siblings. We can’t place anyone yet from her clue, but know that Padma must be adjacent to her. Cho must be in the remaining corner, F6.

F6 – Cho tells us that she is adjacent to the person she dated after Harry, so we know she adjacent to Michael Corner, though we can’t place him yet. She also tells us she is adjacent to a Slytherin she saw with a date at the Yule Ball, and uses “she” pronouns, so we know she is adjacent to Pansy Parkinson, though we cannot place her either. She says Harry is next to the person he dated after Cho, so we know that Ginny must be in B1.

B1 – Ginny tells us that the 2nd row has four prefects, and three of them are consecutive. Of the consecutive prefects, Parvati is adjacent only to one of them. This must be Padma, per her own clue being adjacent to her twin. For Parvati to be adjacent to only Padma of three consecutive prefects, Padma must be in E2, with the other consecutive prefects being in D2 and C2.

E2 – Padma’s clue is that her row and one other contain someone from every house, and that she and Parvati are both adjacent to a ferret to become  a prefect – AKA Draco. For Parvati and Padma to both be adjacent to Draco, he must be in E1 or F2. However, We know from Ginny’s clue that Parvati is only adjacent to one in the consecutive line of prefects. Draco therefore cannot be in this line/in F2, so he must be in E1.

E1 – Draco tells us Padma is the only girl in her row, and that only two prefects from the same house are placed. We know there are three more prefects in Row 2, and they must all be boys. Since Draco is already placed, the other three must be Anthony Goldstein, Ernie Macmillan, and Ron Weasley. Since Padma is the only girl in the row, Anthony must be next to her, as no other prefect pairs would work. We can place Anthony in D2, since we know he cannot be in F2 adjacent to Parvati.

D2 - Anthony tells us that Ron is not adjacent to another prefect, so he cannot be the last consecutive prefect in C2. Therefore, he must be in A2. By process of elimination, Ernie must be in C2.

C2 – Ernie shares a column with all the DA’s quidditch commentators, so we know that he shares a column with Lee Jordan, Zarcharias Smith, and Luna Lovegood. Ron’s favorite is Luna, so she must be in C5.

C5 – Loser’s Lurgy refers to Zacharias Smith, so he must be in C1.

C1 – Zacharias is adjacent to every male from his house, so he must also be adjacent to Justin Finch-Fletchley. Justin must be in D1, as the only other remaining adjacent spot to Zacharias is B2. Justin cannot be in B2, as Harry needs to be adjacent to a member of the Inquisitorial Squad and it is the only space left adjacent to him.

D1 – Luna is adjacent to two future Horcrux destroyers. As she, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all already placed, and we know Luna isn’t adjacent to them, she must be adjacent to Neville and Crabbe. We can’t place them yet. She is not adjacent to any other commentators, so Lee must be in C3.

C3 – Lee is diagonally in between two Ravenclaws, and the Sneak is in his row. B2 must be a Slytherin, so B4 is the remaining Ravenclaw. Marietta (the Sneak) is in his row, so we know it isn’t her. The last remaining Ravenclaw in the DA is Terry Boot, so he must be in B4.

B4 – Terry tells us that Marietta shares a column with Michael, but not Pansy. Pansy and Michael are both adjacent to Cho, per Cho’s clue, so they must be in column E or F. We now know that Pansy must be in column E, as she must share a row or column with Draco (her Yule Ball date). Since Marietta shares a column with Michael but not Pansy, Michael and Pansy must be in different columns, putting Marietta and Michael both in row F. Since we know Marietta is in a row with Lee, that puts her in F3. The only space in Row F adjacent to Cho is F5, so we can place Michael there. All Ravenclaws have now been placed, and each is adjacent to at least one other, so that rule is satisfied.

F5 – Michael shares a row with two prefects. There are 8 prefects in this quiz and 6 have already been placed (Ron, Hermione, Padma, Anthony, Draco, Ernie). The remaining two are Pansy Parkinson and Hannah Abbott. For Michael’s clue to be true, both must be in his row. Pansy must be in E5, as she is adjacent to Cho.

E5 – Pansy is adjacent to the niece of a Ministry Witch. This refers to Susan Bones. While we can’t place her yet, we know she must be adjacent to another Hufflepuff, and the only one this area left to place is Hannah. For Pansy to be adjacent to Susan, and for Hannah to be in Michael’s row, Hannah must be in D5.

D5 – Hannah tells us there are no Hufflepuffs in the row above her, so Susan must be in D6 or E6. Millicent is adjacent to no Hufflepuffs and two Ravenclaws. The only spot this could be true is B5. Hannah also tells us Montague is adjacent to no Hufflepuffs and three Ravenclaws. The only spot this could be true is E3.

E3 – Montague tells us that Neville and Alicia are adjacent to Hermione. We know that Neville must also be adjacent to Luna, per Justin’s clue. To be adjacent to both, he must be in B6, placing Alicia in A5.

B6 – Neville tells us there are no Slytherins in his row, but the youngest DA member is. Since Crabbe is adjacent to Luna per Justin’s clue, he must be in C4 or D4, though we can’t place him yet. “Youngest” refers to Dennis Creevey. Since Dennis must be adjacent to his brother Colin, per Parvati’s clue, they must be in C6 and D6. We can’t place them for sure yet, but that means that Susan Bones must be in E6.

A5 – Alicia tells us that Fred and George are adjacent to Montague (the one they pushed into a Vanishing Cabinet), but that Angelina (Alicia’s quidditch captain year 5) is not adjacent to Montague. We can’t place anyone from this, and look to Susan’s clue for more information.

E6 – Susan tells us that no column has more than one person who doesn’t survive the series., and that the end columns both survive the series. We know that Crabbe must be in C4 or D4, and Colin Creevey must be in C5 or D6, and from Susan know they are not in the same column. Since Fred is adjacent to Montague, and cannot be in column D (Crabbe or Colin will be in this column as someone who doesn’t survive) or F (this column all survives) he must be in E4. This column is now full, so Angelina must be in his row as they are Yule Ball dates. Angelina cannot be adjacent to Montague, so she is in A4 or C4.

E4 – Fred shares a row with two beaters and two chasers, no one reserve. We know Angelina and Crabbe are in his row, so one chaser and one beater are accounted for. There is a photographer in George’s column. The photographer refers to Colin Creevey, who we know is in C6 or D6. He must be in D6, as George cannot be in column C and be adjacent to Fred. George will be in D4 or D3. Since we can place Colin in D6, we can also place Dennis in C6 adjacent to him. Because each column has only one person who doesn’t survive the series, Crabbe must be in C4, adjacent to Luna and in a different column than Colin. Since Crabbe is in C4, Angelina must be in A4 to be in Fred’s row, not adjacent to Montague.

A4 – Angelina tells us someone in her column was a late joiner to the DA. This is Seamus Finnigan, who must go in the only open spot in her column, A3.

A3 – Seamus must be in the same row as Lavender Brown, his Yule Ball date, as his column is full. Only one person in his row is in his year, and we know that must be Lavender. He is not adjacent to any beaters. The remaining Beaters in the quiz are George Weasley and Gregory Goyle. Goyle cannot be in Seamus’s row, as they are in the same year. He also cannot be in B2, as Seamus isn’t adjacent to any beaters. Therefore, Goyle must be in Fred’s row. Since Fred shares a row with only two beaters, and Crabbe and Goyle are now both in his row, George cannot be in his row. The only spot left adjacent to Fred is D3, so George must be there. This also puts Lavender in B3, the remaining open spot in the row.

D3 - George is adjacent to Goyle, but not Warrington. This tells us Goyle is in D4, and confirms the name of the last remaining Slytherin/Inquisitorial Squad member. Warrington must be in B2 in order for Harry, Ginny, and Ron to be adjacent to an Inquisitorial Squad member. We know that Fred’s row must have another chaser, and he specifies not a reserve chaser. The only two people left are Katie Bell, and Dean Thomas. Katie must be in Fred’s row, therefore, and is in F4. The last spot let is F2, so Dean goes there, fulfilling that Parvati must also be near a Gryffindor.
