This is for Ronen.

So how can we cultivate affordances for virtuous Spaces?

- Chapter 11: Dialogical Practices and the Search for Meaning

58:42

58 minutes, 42 seconds

- **If we if you can't share meaning has to be shared and share sharable means we're it's a dialogical thing. You can correct me and I can correct you. Who makes English? Who changes the English language?**

- There's no person. We do it dialogically. And if I start using terms, nickn

this idea that meaning is inside me in my personal possession. It is normative.

You have there is no meaning without the cultivation of wisdom. What you're doing is you're confusing meaning with a sort

of sense. You're you're soothing your self-esteem. That's not what meaning is about. Meaning is about like meaning is

about are you realized such that you can realize reality that's meaning we talk about being mature as facing up to

reality facing confronting connecting letting it correct you and up because it has a normative aspect the true the good

and the beautiful so to to to answer your question we go back to that point and this is in Socrates what we look for

is and I I've coined a term because I don't like the English word it's too weak it's too tepid it's the soup is too thin it's not dialogue it's dialogos

it's by means of the logos we learn we come to and we don't just believe this we practice it right we practice it in

both senses like the way you practice to learn a martial art and the way a lawyer practices law we practice it we practice

that you I come into this situation you are my best way of overcoming my selfdeception

And in return, I will give myself to you as your best way of overcoming your selfdeception. And we will get into a

form of exchange and me shared meaning making.

So something emerges between us. You've had those conversations where they take on a life of your own and both people get to a place they didn't think they

could get to on their own.

And they're right. They don't have to agree. They don't have to come to the same conclusion.

They just have to carry each

other along and they can get a sense of a much greater way to make sense and a re and a greater reality that is

disclosed by that. We we teach this practice. It's called dialectic into dialogue. We teach people how to read a text together. So it's **transformative and not informative.** We call that philosophical fellowship. We teach people how to take your personal problems, use collective dialogue, and

extract a universal dilemma on it because then it's sharable. It's no longer just yours and what virtue could be brought to bear and then how to carry

that back down into your personal problem. This is a Socratic search.

There's all these practices we can do and we can set them up so that they are held dialogically.
