I've been posting about AI-related topics on Bluesky for over a year now. While it isn't always easy - the median Bluesky user is famously AI-hostile - I've really enjoyed seeing the AI community here grow over time. In this spirit of fostering this community, here are a few tips I've developed for posting about AI on Bluesky:
Don't: assume a bad outcome
New posters who have heard about Bluesky's reputation will often post things like:
"I know Bluesky doesn't like AI, but..."
"Locking replies because it's about AI, but..."
"I'm going to get hate for this, but..."
This starts things off on a negative note, and is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead of trying to get ahead of a negative outcome, try expecting a positive outcome and see what happens. You'll be surprised how often it works, and you get a good discussion instead of the hate you anticipated.
Do: remember there's an active AI community on Bluesky
It's true! There are dozens of us! (Thousands, actually). It's easy to think that Bluesky is entirely anti-AI because anti-AI voices are a vocal majority right now. But there's an active AI community that's excited to talk about all sorts of AI topics. We've got engineers, professors, economists, policy people, artists, polymaths, boosters, doomers, gloomers, cyborgs, and other miscellaneous colorful characters. If you spend enough time here you'll meet them all.
Don't: only focus on the haters
Even though there's an active AI community on Bluesky, it can be easy to focus on the anti-AI crowd. After all, some anti-AI opinions are legitimately shortsighted and unscientific, and seeing these criticisms shared without sufficient scrutiny can be frustrating. While I don't recommend ignoring these voices entirely, I also recommend spending equal or greater time engaging with people who are more open-minded on AI topics. Wrestling with critics is reactive; sharing information with curious people is generative.
Do: support other AI posters
On a similar note, remember that community is participatory- you get out what you put in. If you aren't seeing the engagement you want to see yet, you probably aren't alone - try seeking out other like-minded accounts and support them in the meantime! Like generously, share things. Build lists of your favorite accounts. Become a reply guy. These small gestures are what community is built on, and soon enough, you'll see plenty of support in return!
Bonus: don't be afraid to block and remove hostile quotes
I'm including this item as a bonus because it's not advice that I follow myself- but, it's advice that other AI posters swear by. Some of the worst situations on Bluesky happen when a large anti-AI account quote-posts a smaller one, leading to an influx of harassing replies and DMs. In this case, don't be afraid to simply block the offending account; this will cut the harassment off at the source.
Conclusion: Go Forth and Post
I hope you find these tips helpful, and I look forward to reading your posts! Here's to a flourishing AI community on Bluesky in 2026 and beyond!
