Writing minor characters in roleplay tends to have a series of stipulations. Many writers do not want to roleplay with minor characters, and that's absolutely up to them to decide. For those that are willing to write with minor characters, there are a great many red flags that can come up while writing with them especially if the writer is an unknown variable.
I am not going to pretend I've never written anything questionable. I tend to write some dark topics that include minors, including child death (Beth), and children fighting monsters (Lian, Mar'i, Beth, Verina, Clarice). This post is intended to serve as a public-facing guideline concerning what I will and will not write while writing a minor character.
Children are naturally curious and will emulate their elders, and their environment and nurturing will shape them along with their own decisions. While it may be in-character for a minor character to make sexual innuendos—such as if they spend a lot of time with other characters or similarly-aged peers that do—, I will not write that. The closest I will come will be to reference the same topic (so if someone makes an innuendo or double entadre about pirates, then the topic of pirates might be referenced in a broad stroke).
It will be assumed that any character I write over the age of 8 will have had some variation of "the talk", however, this is verse-dependent. A fantasy character may not have had such a discussion at a young age, while a modern-day character will have. This is based on personal experience not just with myself but with my aunts and uncles, cousins, and other friends. In this day and age, waiting until the age of 12-13 is often too late to give such a discussion.
Children often question things at the worst possible times, or overhear things that are extremely embarrassing (based on personal experience) and question them without knowing that they're inherently inappropriate for them to discuss. In this instance, I would either spin the question to make it far less inappropriate, or simply not have them ask it and ask something else.
When I write a child, it's about having them question power structures and "well that's just the way it's been done", and is, at it's core, about viewing the world from an innocent lens, and about writing their potential. Children are wonderful, free from the societal boundaries that adults struggle to navigate, wondrous in their curiosity and their imagination, and I endeavor to always write them with that in mind.
If I write a minor character that is directly associated with a character you write, and I write something you dislike, disagree with, or object to, I would heavily encourage you to message me directly. I am going to message people I write with ahead of time to set baselines for what topics they're comfortable talking about with that character, and what situations (slice-of-life, drama, action, etc) they're comfortable having that character deal with along with their child. In the realm of comics, I assume that most general comic storylines are safe.
However, even if I write them perfectly to my own tastes, someone will disagree with something I've written. In this instance I would encourage you to either reach out to me so we can have a discussion about it, or simply block me and all of my accounts.
TL;DR
I will not write sexual scenarios with minors.
I will not write children doing hard drugs, drinking alcoholic beverages, or smoking any substances.
I will not tolerate sexual comments directed at minor characters that I write.
I will not write a minor character making inappropriate sexual comments towards others.
I try very hard to write minor characters with as much respect as I can. I am not perfect nor do I pretend to be, but I will make every effort for these characters.
