This post originally appeared on The Fulcrum. Welcome to this week's The Programmer's Fulcrum. It's your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism. As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy...
It seems City of Edinburgh Council have realised paving over a drain isn't the smartest idea.
It has been fairly quiet this week, so far we have made 4 catering deliveries, including the two today pictured to Atria One and the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute. We also bought lunch, consisting of soup and main courses, to the Heart of Newhaven Community Centre, and cured meat to the Belfry.
Tightening up the ship After a year of publishing The Fulcrum, I (as publisher) now know the topics, tools, and techniques I want to focus The Programmer's Fulcrum coverage on. And maybe it will have the side benefit of shorter TPF posts. We'll see if I can tighten up my discipline as well. ;) That...

We have known this for years. We have known that the major platforms are bad for our attention, our sleep, our politics, our children, and our sense of reality. And yet here we are, still scrolling. This essay is an attempt to answer two questions: why is leaving so hard, and what does it look like when it finally becomes possible? Let's take the platforms one at a time, because each one has found its own distinctive way to be terrible. Meta is the empire that learned nothing. In 2018, we learne...
Added AT Proto publishing to my blog and played with local LLM models
Not an exciting post, but theoretically, this blog post should cross-post to Bluesky and exist in some way in the AT Protocol atmosphere. Maybe that is exciting!
A week of exploring the atproto protocol, homelab, and AI.
Announcing folk.zone, a collection of free, community-run internet services I'm building as an IndieWeb commons. Including Mastodon, WriteFreely, Forgejo, Pixelfed, Lemmy, and more. All self-hosted on hardware in my living space. This is infrastructure for the common folk, not for enterprise or scale, inspired by omg.lol and rooted in the IndieWeb and Fediverse principles.
A reflection on digital sovereignty, cultural memory, and the role of memory institutions at a decisive moment for the internet
Diving into the idea of bridging different social networks and protocols like ATproto and ActivityPub to enhance the web. Looking back at my personal web journey, from Web 2.0 to now, emphasizing that building connections can strengthen online communities.
This article originally appeared on The Fulcrum. It explores what sets Bonfire apart (for its users) from closed commercial social platforms and even its peers on open social. (And it will also note which capabilities our Manade project will or will not enable. Manade is an example / starter private instance of Bonfire that {preferably}...
During Automattic's Radical Speed Month, Matthias and I built Reader Everywhere: a new way to follow Bluesky, Mastodon, and the Fediverse from the WordPress.com Reader. 90-second demo below. :)
This article explores Bonfire Flavours, the platform’s starter apps targeted to specific types of communities. It originally appeared on The Fulcrum's official website. In the May 8, 2026 The Programmers Fulcrum we announced the beginning of development work on our Manade project with a co-op. It will be built on the Bonfire platform and you...
This article originally appeared on The Fulcrum. I published an article on Symfony Station (now sunset) years ago, titled Need a Writing Stack and Workflow for a Tech Newsletter or Blog?. It did not concern Symfony or PHP directly. However, it was still related. We wanted to be the best source for news on the...
People love your work because of its impact, not how it works.
How do you fund work people don't want to pay for?
How open protocols and agentic development could lead to a whole new generation of social applications.
A short intro about two federated software apps I'm using and learning more and more about all the time!
Flipboard's browser for the open social web is out for web users today.
A list emojis for each open social web software and service
