History loves a good outlaw. We romanticize the ruthless efficiency of Jesse James, the icy stare of Billy the Kid, and the tactical genius of Butch Cassidy. They were dangerous men who left bloody legacies.

Then there is Al Jennings.

If you asked Al, he was the fastest gun in the West. He claimed to have beaten Jesse James in a shooting match. He boasted about dodging bullets, outsmarting sheriffs, and terrorizing the Oklahoma Territory.

But if you look at the actual historical records? Al Jennings was arguably the worst train robber in American history. His criminal career was a masterclass in spectacular failure. Yet, his inability to pull off a successful heist did not stop him from becoming a massive celebrity.

Long before modern influencers figured out how to monetize bad behavior, this five-foot-one-inch outlaw spun his botched robberies into a lucrative Hollywood career. He literally failed his way to the top.

This is the true story of how a terrible bandit became the most famous fake-tough-guy of the 20th century.

The lawyer who wanted to be bad

To understand Al Jennings, you have to look at his father. Born in Virginia in 1863, Alphonso J. Jennings grew up under the roof of John D.F. Jennings. The elder Jennings was a chaotic mix of professions. He worked as a doctor, a Methodist minister, a schoolmaster, and a lawyer. He also fled Williamson County, Illinois, after allegedly owing the local school fund over $900.

Clearly, a loose relationship with the law ran in the family.

The Jennings clan eventually settled in the rugged, dusty plains of Oklahoma Territory. Al was a smart kid. He did not initially set out to rob trains. Instead, he followed his father’s footsteps into the courtroom. By age 21, he had passed the Comanche County bar. In 1892, voters even elected him District Attorney in El Reno, Oklahoma.

He was a prosecuting attorney. He wore nice suits. He had a stable, respectable life. But the courtroom was boring. Out on the plains, gangs like the Daltons and the Doolins were making headlines. Real desperadoes scoffed at lawyers. Al wanted that outlaw glory.

The turning point came when a rival lawyer shot and killed his brother, Ed, during a bitter dispute. The local justice system failed to convict the killer. Disillusioned and angry, Al decided he was done playing by the rules. He teamed up with his other brother, Frank, and decided to hit the outlaw trail.

The jennings gang

Starting a gang requires muscle. Al and Frank recruited two Irish-American brothers, Pat and Morris O’Malley, known for their marksmanship. They also brought in a hardened criminal named “Little Dick” West. West was a former member of the Doolin Gang and a legitimate badman.

On paper, the Jennings Gang sounded intimidating. In practice? They were a disaster.

Most outlaw gangs spent weeks planning a heist. They scoped out the terrain, calculated train schedules, and secured fast horses. The Jennings Gang preferred to wing it.

The engine Stand-off

During one of his very first attempts to rob a train, Al decided to take the direct approach. He stood right in the middle of the railroad tracks. He raised his pistol, stared down the massive iron locomotive barreling toward him, and ordered the engineer to halt.

Did the train stop? Absolutely not.

Trains do not stop for tiny men waving six-shooters. At the very last possible second, Al had to dive out of the way to avoid getting pulverized by the engine. The train just kept rolling.

The Dynamite disaster

By August 16, 1897, the gang decided to step up their game. They targeted a southbound Santa Fe passenger train near Edmond, Oklahoma. This time, they actually managed to board the engine and force the engineer to stop.

Their goal was the Wells Fargo express safe, which sat in the baggage car, supposedly stuffed with cash.

The gang broke into the car. They planted dynamite on the heavy iron safe. They lit the fuse, ran for cover, and waited for the glorious explosion. The blast rattled the train cars, filling the air with thick gray smoke. When the dust cleared, the gang rushed in to grab the loot.

The safe was completely intact. They had botched the charge.

Frustrated, they planted more dynamite. They lit a second fuse and took cover again. Another massive boom shook the tracks. The gang ran back into the express car. Once again, the stubborn iron safe sat there, completely undamaged.

Realizing they had absolutely no idea how to use explosives, the gang gave up on the safe. To save face, they wandered through the passenger cars. They forced the terrified travelers to empty their pockets. What was the grand total of this daring heist? A handful of pocket change, some cheap watches, a jug of whiskey, and a bunch of bananas.

They literally robbed a train for fruit.

Real outlaws considered the Jennings Gang a joke. Fred Dalton of the infamous Dalton Gang openly mocked Al, calling him “the guy who held the horses”.

Capture, prison, and the O. Henry connection

You can only bumble your way through the Wild West for so long before the law catches up. The gang’s crime spree lasted barely 109 days.

In late November 1897, legendary U.S. Marshal Bud Ledbetter tracked the gang to the Spike S. Ranch. This ranch served as a known hideout for outlaws. Ledbetter and his deputies surrounded the property. When the shooting started, Al tried to make a heroic stand. He fired from the house, exchanging nearly 100 shots with the marshals.

The gang managed to escape the initial shootout, but their luck completely ran out a few days later. Betrayed by an associate, Al and his brother were captured without a fight.

The justice system did not care that Al was terrible at his job. Blowing up train cars and shooting at U.S. Marshals carried heavy penalties. In 1899, a judge sentenced Al Jennings to life in prison at the federal penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio.

Famous cellmate

Prison is a brutal place, but it offered Al an incredible networking opportunity. While doing time in Ohio, he worked in the prison hospital. There, he befriended another convicted felon named William Sydney Porter.

Porter was serving time for embezzlement. You probably know him by his pen name: O. Henry.

The famous short story author and the bumbling outlaw became close friends. They swapped stories about the outside world. O. Henry possessed a brilliant literary mind, and Al had a knack for spinning tall tales. This friendship would profoundly shape Al’s future. He realized that a good story could be just as valuable as a successful train robbery.

Roosevelt pardon

Al did not plan on dying in a cell. His family still had deep political connections back in the legal world. His brother John, a respected lawyer, fought tirelessly to reduce Al’s sentence. Through relentless legal appeals, John managed to get the life sentence knocked down to just five years.

Al walked out of the Ohio Penitentiary in 1902.

But he wanted his full citizenship back. He wanted his record wiped clean. Luckily, his family had friends in very high places. President Theodore Roosevelt had actually known Al’s father from his days in the legal circuit. In 1904, Roosevelt officially pardoned Al Jennings, restoring his civil rights.

Think about that. A guy who shot at federal marshals and blew up mail cars got a presidential pardon because his dad knew the right people.

Cellblock to Silver screen

A newly free man, Al moved back to Oklahoma. He married a woman named Maude, who stood several inches taller than him. He resumed practicing law, but the quiet life still bored him.

He decided to enter politics. In 1914, he ran for Governor of Oklahoma.

His campaign platform was bizarre. He leaned heavily into his criminal past, presenting himself as a reformed bad boy who understood the gritty realities of the justice system. The voters did not buy it. He lost the election. But the campaign gave him a taste of the spotlight, and he realized where he truly belonged: Hollywood.

Beating back

In 1914, Al wrote an autobiography titled Beating Back. The book was a masterclass in historical fiction. He completely rewrote his own life story.

In his version, the Jennings Gang were ruthless, cunning outlaws. He claimed they stole thousands of dollars. He wrote about daring shootouts and hair-breadth escapes. He conveniently left out the part about stealing bananas.

The book became a massive hit. The newly formed motion picture industry immediately saw the potential for a blockbuster.

That same year, a film studio adapted Beating Back into a silent movie. Who did they cast to play the dangerous, legendary Al Jennings? Al Jennings himself.

At 50 years old, the ex-convict stood in front of a camera and recreated his own crimes for adoring audiences. The movie was heavily marketed. Posters proclaimed it as “the life story of Al J. Jennings, formerly an Oklahoma bandit and all-round ‘bad man'”. People flocked to theaters to see a “real” outlaw on the silver screen.

The Hollywood consultant

Al moved to California permanently. He bought a small chicken ranch in the San Fernando Valley and embedded himself in the movie business.

Directors loved him. They hired him as a technical consultant for Westerns. He advised famous directors like Alan Dwan on how to stage realistic shootouts and bank robberies. If a director asked Al how a specific outlaw tactic worked, Al would just invent an answer. He projected absolute confidence. Show business folks were completely charmed by his gritty persona.

He ended up acting in over 100 silent and early talkie Westerns. He starred alongside cowboy legends like Tex Ritter. He even wrote a book about his old prison buddy, titled Through the Shadows With O. Henry.

He had successfully turned his criminal failures into a bulletproof personal brand.

The lone ranger lawsuit and final years

Living on a quiet chicken ranch did not stop Al from finding trouble. He remained fiercely protective of his “deadly” reputation.

He constantly bragged about his shooting skills. He told reporters he always shot his victims in the throat so they could not talk back. (Historians confirm there is absolutely zero record of Al Jennings ever killing anyone).

His actual gunfights in California were purely accidental. While cleaning a loaded pistol on his ranch, he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot his neighbor right in the elbow. Another time, he heard a rustling in the chicken coop. Thinking it was a thief, he fired his weapon into the dark. He missed the thief entirely and shot his own prize-winning rooster dead.

His ego eventually led him to the courtroom one last time.

In 1945, The Lone Ranger radio show broadcasted an episode featuring a character based on Al Jennings. In the script, the heroic Lone Ranger shot a pistol right out of Al’s hand.

Al was furious. He sued the producers of the show for defamation of character. He stood before a judge and fiercely argued that even in the realm of complete make-believe, absolutely nobody was fast enough to shoot a gun out of his hand.

He lost the case.

Alphonso J. Jennings outlived almost every real gunslinger from the Old West. He spent his final years sitting on his porch, spinning wild yarns for anyone who would listen. When his beloved wife Maude died in 1961, the heartbroken bandit took to his bed. He passed away a month later at the incredible age of 98.

A Legacy of lies and laughter

So, how should we remember Al Jennings?

Was he a dangerous outlaw? No. Was he a brilliant mastermind? Definitely not.

But you have to respect the hustle. He survived the brutal frontier justice system. He walked out of a federal penitentiary with a presidential pardon. He looked at a resume filled with embarrassing failures and decided to sell it as a heroic epic.

In a weird way, Al Jennings was the first modern celebrity. He understood that the truth does not matter if the story is entertaining enough. He gave the public exactly what they wanted: a sanitized, thrilling version of the Wild West.

He may not have been the fastest gun on the range, but he was undeniably the fastest talker.
