An app can change some things about its lexicon formats, but if it changes it in incompatible ways, then also older existing data written by the same app becomes incompatible with the new version, so generally it's a good idea to only extend the lexicons in a way that is compatible both ways if you don't want to break things.

Hmm… I haven't heard about this Mars Trilogy, but I read the description now on Wikipedia, and this sounds relevant to my interests 👀 :>

What you're describing as a network of small, partial, self-sufficient, "local-first" AppViews without full network search kind of already exists, in the Fediverse… and Bluesky/ATProto was kind of specifically designed to not work like that, because of the perceived downsides of that approach… Bluesky users like being able to see and find everything, without having to set up relays to pull in content from outside your direct circles.

And I'm not sure why you're focusing so much in some parts on the handle domains, as if it was somehow presented by Bluesky as the key part that creates decentralization, while it's just one small part of it. Also the reselling of domains was never widely promoted by Bluesky as some key subscription, they basically forgot about it immediately after announcing it and it's even hard to find the page, if it still works at all.
