Thanks David! I had started by taking some usual angles along the street while I was standing up, and then I had this idea of putting the camera almost to the ground. Glad it worked out so nicely. Thanks David! The red subway train whooshing through just after I had framed the overall shot was certainly welcome. 😇Thanks so much, Debbie! And my cordial congratulations back to you and your husband - 35 years is quite the milestone! 😍Cheers David! It’s been more than 20 years since I made the trip during which I shot this photo, and while the background traffic situation is a bit messy, I feel like I lucked out on the timing to have all ingredients (and the taxi passenger) placed as they are.Very nice write-up, David, it captures much of my sentiment and motivation related to photography as well.
An additional point for me, as I now live in Tokyo, is a "documentary" notion that is two-fold: On the one hand, buildings get demolished and re-built at an insane speed and rate here, and the same is true for the repurposing of shops and businesses - so just recording the environment "as it is at the moment" has already turned out to be a record of bygone times more often than I would have imagined at the time of shooting.
And secondly, I just enjoy being able (or at least trying) to provide a counterbalance to a certain type of influencers who like to portray Tokyo as this hyper-modern, futuristic "Gotham City". That's not how I experience daily life here at all - in its essence, Tokyo is really the world's biggest collection of adjacent tiny villages, each with its own character, but by and large inhabited by normal and friendly people.
Cheers, and keep up the great work! Also, thanks so much for having added my site as a recommendation for your new subscribers; I'll gladly do the same over the next couple of days.Cheers David! It's about a half-hour drive outside the city, and close to the ocean - the "Japanese Countryside" vibes are strong. 🌾Thanks for your comment, David! The last one was taken near an intersection, and the writing on the road says "止まれ" (tomare), meaning "stop". 🛑Thank you! It does bring me a lot of joy so far. leaflet.pub, pckt.blog and offprint.app are all fun to use in this ecosystem - each has a slightly different focus and degree of "playfulness", but all of them do exude the "fun internet era" vibes that you talked about.
Thanks a lot, Debbie! I don't play all that often, but my wife and I really enjoy Carcassonne, and yesterday was a good opportunity to have a go at it. 😀
Thanks very much, Sebastian! As much of a busy global metropolis as Tokyo is, you can always find these lovely neighborhood moments.Great write-up, thanks! In addition to what was mentioned in the article and by previous commenters:
・Ability to set a custom post slug instead of {rkey}, e.g. /kyoto-japan-cherry-blossom-photos instead of /3bamcl6sbry2j. Or have something like custom fields where this information could be recorded for “background use”.
・Create (and keep refreshed in the background) sitemap.xml with urls of static and blog pages (either rkey or custom slug, if definable)
