The one thing I'd tack on is that even beyond the cost of the following feeds, fulltext search, etc, the other thing big appviews like bluesky, blacksky, northsky, etc have to do is their own moderation. Doing moderation for a 40M user social network is a huge cost and it'a basically required by legal liability and the moral implications of not doing it, and by the fact that moderation is also your differentiation as an AppView. I think this is easy to overlook because the fediverse is largely volunteer community mods, but that doesn't really work at the scale bluesky is at.
