My guess is that mentioning ATproto, and by extension Bluesky, as the technical foundation of their product would undermine their branding and sovereignty pitch. We in the space know that building on ATproto does not make you dependent on US tech. The broader public does not. They see Bluesky as an American Left Twitter. Any associative link between W and Bluesky would defeat the whole point of their announcement. I don't like it. I don't agree with it. But I get it. Let's welcome them into the ATproto community and help them make the most of the fantastic ecosystem choice they made.

Cosign. Such a waste of effort and attention to emulate the platforms but on the other side of the ocean. What difference will that make? Change the game. Overwrite the problem entirely.

This is the way. Do things visibly and curious people who are interested will naturally drop by. If you find a theme or idea later that could be a whole project, great--spin it out, set up a company, whatever. The goal isn't to find that thing, if it comes along it's a product of circumstance. It's not why we're tinkering and gardening in the first place. Big fan of the yew tree/garden metaphr btw :)
