Thanks Norbert, I absolutely get the need to document the ‘shifting sands’ of the built environment, especially when it’s changing so rapidly. And you’re right, there’s a tendency to just focus on the hyper-modern aspects of Tokyo, as if we were in a William Gibson novel and it really misses the point that cities are always a constantly changing mix of developments side-by-side. Your description of the ‘villages’ is often used to describe London as well, and you only really get to understand that when you live in a city for some time. I love it that your photos do exactly as you describe and show the mix of age, styles and scale across a large city.

I'm also a fan of Gibson and loved this trilogy, having got into it from listening to the BBC podcast The Coming Storm by Gabriel Gatehouse. Gibson's near-future dystopian environments are rich with context, narrative and characters, sometimes convoluted, and all with a counter-culture vibe set against a parasitic corporate and 'one percent' owned consumer-dominated society. Looking back at this over 40 years since it was written, Gibson was remarkably prescient, noting our current concerns around the 'one percent' and the increasing use of AI. A fabulous trilogy!
